Retailers Have A Growing Sense Of Optimism

After an abysmal year of retail sales as the United States and Britain suffered their worst recessions in decades, fashion directors at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Harrods and Liberty feel a growing sense of optimism.

When New York Fashion Week starts on Thursday to showcase fall and winter collections for 2010, buyers are planning to be more selective and buy fewer clothes as they push shoppers to pay full price instead of waiting for discount sales.

“We have all become much more edited and selective in the way that we buy,” said Colleen Sherin, fashion director of Saks Fifth Avenue. “It is making the consumer realize ‘I probably cannot wait three months to get this on sale, I need to buy it now and I want to buy it now.’”

But while shoppers remain cautious about spending, they are not playing it safe when it comes to fashion choices.

“If she already owns it she’s not interested in buying it again … She is purchasing things to add to her wardrobe to update it with the current message of the season,” said Ken Downing, fashion director at Neiman Marcus.

“Everyone is aware of the economic situation and there’s a need to really speak to the customer in a voice that is going to get her excited and ignited when the season rolls round to come into the stores and shop,” he said. “We want clothes that are so enticing that she wants them at regular price and not waiting for them to be marked down.”

World’s Oldest Shoe Probably Fell Out Of Fashion

The world’s oldest shoe may have suffered the fate of cutting-edge design down the ages — falling out of fashion.

A 5,500-year-old soft-soled plain leather moccasin with laces found in a cave in Armenia is from a previously unknown culture that flourished with the first farmers. It is 1,000 years older than the Great Pyramid of Giza. The right shoe — the left has not been discovered — is in good condition, with no sign of why it was discarded.

Ron Pinhasi, of University College Cork, believes that it may simply have gone out of style. “In societies that are no longer egalitarian you have the wealthier showing they can afford things,” he said.

The shoe was preserved by the cool, dry cave and a layer of sheep dung that sealed it from the air. It was stuffed with grass, probably to maintain its shape, researchers say in the Public Library of Science One.

It is similar to the pampooties that were worn in parts of Ireland until the 20th century.

The French fashion industry has signed a charter to promote healthy body images among ultra-skinny models in magazine ads and on the catwalks of Paris

After more than a year of talks, officials from fashion houses, advertising firms and media outlets joined Health Minister Roselyne Bachelot to ink the voluntary charter, joining a worldwide drive to combat anorexia.

The charter outlines a series of guidelines but falls short of imposing restrictions, as is the case in Spain which has set a minimum body mass index of 18 for catwalk models. This translates to a minimum weight of 56 kilograms for a height of 175 centimetres.

French fashion supremos committed to a series of “positive actions” to promote healthy body images, mostly through awareness-raising and information sharing.

Signatories pledged to refrain from using “images of people, in particular youth, that could contribute to promoting a model of extreme thinness.”

The measures were drafted by a working group set up in January 2007 by the Health Ministry to respond to recent alarm over the deaths of models and an outcry over bare-bone physiques being held up as the epitome of beauty.

In November 2006, Ana Carolina Reston died at the age of 21, weighing in at less than 40 kilograms for her tall 170 centimetre frame. Uruguayan model Luisel Ramos died of heart failure in August that same year.

Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani caused a stir last year with a series of anti-anorexia ads featuring Frenchwoman Isabelle Caro, who weighs just 32 kilograms for a height of 165 centimetres.
